Humane Society of Calloway County

Welcome to the Humane Society of Calloway County

We are a grass roots nonprofit organization whose mission is to make a difference for animals and the people who love them. With no government funding and no national oversight, we offer pet adoptions along with many services including spay/neuter assistance, a pet food bank, a foster program, dog training (and much more!) here in Calloway County.

ADOPT

A FUREVER FRIEND

At HSCC, we love animals. Dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, Guinea pigs... we love 'em all. So our passion is placing them in homes where they'll become beloved members of the family. With reasonable adoption fees, spay/neuter support and lots of wonderful pets just waiting for you to love them, we make it easy to bring a new companion into your home. And we promise your life will change for the better. Check out local pets looking for fur-ever homes.

VOLUNTEER

YOUR TIME

We realize not everyone can bring a pet into their home forever. (Well, really, we think everyone should but understand that circumstances don't always allow.) But sometimes you can offer an animal a temporary haven, a loving place to call "mine" before they find a forever home. Or maybe you can share your time and talents with pets in need in other ways. We are entirely funded by donations, and staffed by volunteers. We need you! Check out volunteer opportunities here.

Dog and Puppy

Obedience Classes

Openings Available in Humane Society's Dog & Puppy Obedience Classes - Dog Starts September 12 & Puppy Starts September 10 - Sign up now!

The autumn Humane Society of Calloway County’s dog and puppy obedience classes begin in September. Classes focus on training you to help your dog or puppy learn good manners and basic commands. Your dog may even become a Canine Good Citizen like Mousse, pictured here with his guardian, Alisha Lilly, in an earlier class.

Obedience classes are a great place to spend quality, fun time with your dog or puppy. The Humane Society’s dog and puppy obedience classes provide that opportunity as you work together toward your puppy or dog becoming a well-behaved companion at home and in the community. Basic training and good manners for the dogs are the focus of both classes.

Puppy Kindergarten begins on Tuesday, September 10 and Dog Obedience begins on Thursday, September 12. Classes meet at 6 p.m. for seven weeks for puppy class and eight weeks for dog obedience class. Classes are held outdoors weather permitting and indoor accommodations are available. The fee is $120 for the course or $100 for members, Humane Society and Animal Shelter adopters and prior participants.

The classes help the handler teach the dog to sit, stay, lie down, not to pull on the leash while walking, not to jump on other dogs or people and to come when called. “It’s a completely positive activity and a great way to bond with your dog,” according to Kathy Hodge, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Calloway County. “The more you work with your dog, the better you both get.”

Socializing with new people and places in important in the classes. “Socialization with other dogs and with new people is an extremely important part of a dog’s development into a good citizen,” says Hodge.

Submit your registration form and fee here. You can upload vaccination records here or you or your veterinarian can email them to humanesociety@murray-ky.net any time prior to the beginning of class. You are also welcome to sign up in person at the Humane Society at 270-759-1884 Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Preregistration is required. The fall obedience classes which will be the final sessions for 2024 will begin in September.
